Electric car batteries that can reach a whopping 600 miles before they ever need a recharge — twice the mileage of today’s EVs — are coming to a garage near you, Samsung recently boasted.

Typically, lithium-ion batteries in modern EVs tap out at around 300 miles, with drivers wasting 45 minutes waiting for a charge from 10% to 80%.

The new batteries, however, double the distance and slash the wait time to around nine minutes, the company said.

Solid Energies, one manufacturer of these All Solid-State Batteries (ASSBs), has a good whitepaper explaining the tech (or at least their implementation of it), along with some self-serving marketing material comparing themselves against competing ASSB tech: Superior All Solid State Solutions, Why ASSB.

If this tech delivers on its promises, this will be a game-changer. Not just for electric vehicles, but for all portable rechargeable devices. Higher capacity and less chance of catching fire are both critical to the future of modern electronics.

Looking forward to seeing this in future cell phones and laptops.

A solutions-based synthesis can make thin yet strong electrolytes for solid-state batteries

New batteries are often described with comparatives: they’re safer, lighter, or longer-lived than today’s versions. Solid-state batteries—those which contain no liquid—can make two such claims. With inorganic electrolytes, they’re much less likely to catch fire than traditional lithium-ion batteries, which have organic electrolytes. And by swapping out graphite for lithium as the anode, you can get a massive increase (up to 10-fold) in energy density, making solid-state batteries look especially promising for electric vehicles.

While Liu’s project officially ended on 31 January, the team is now in talks with a different federal funding agency and an industry player to continue their work. The goal is to create a working prototype for a solid-state battery with a two ampere hour (Ah) capacity—similar to the capacity of most smartphone batteries today—at a target cost of below US $100 per kilowatt hour (kWh) within the next two to three years.

Cool new tech. Maybe we'll see these in our phones, tablets and laptop computers in a few years.

Giving an old Mac a new lease on life

This weekend, I upgraded my daughter's 2011 MacBook Air with a new SSD and battery and gave it a new lease on life. Although this computer is six years old, it still has no problem handling all the tasks she uses it for: web surfing, photos, Microsoft Office, music, YouTube and other related tasks. But after all this time, the 120G SSD is getting full and the battery only lasts about an hour on a full charge. The computer was also running a pretty old version of macOS - 10.7 ("Lion") was released in 2011 and hasn't seen an update since 2012. Because of this, several other key applications, including Firefox and Chrome were also old and out of date, and were in need of upgrades.
