Epoch Health: How Aged Cells Revert to Stem Cells to Repair the Body

How Aged Cells Revert to Stem Cells to Repair the Body
George Citroner . Updated:

The body may have a hidden tissue repair trick up its sleeve.

Scientists have long assumed that once a tissue runs out of stem cells, the damage is permanent. New research out of Israel suggests otherwise. The body may be able to turn back the clock on its own aging cells, converting them into fresh stem cells to repair itself from within.

Researchers found that mature, aged cells in the cornea can revert into active stem cells to regenerate damaged tissue—a previously unknown way the human body heals itself.

If this research pans out, it could become a massive game-changer.

Scientists create fluoride-free gel that restores lost enamel within two weeks
By Neetika Walter

Losing tooth enamel has long been a one-way street. Once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. But that may soon change.

Scientists have developed a new gel that can repair and regenerate enamel, offering a glimpse of a future where teeth can heal themselves.
...
Acting as a scaffold, it pulls calcium and phosphate ions from saliva and promotes the organized growth of new minerals in a process known as epitaxial mineralization.

The result? Newly grown enamel that restores both the structure and properties of natural teeth.

They're expecting a product to ship next year. If it works as promised, this will be a massive game-changer for dental health.

Healthline: Why Ditching Daylight Saving Time Would Be Healthier for Everyone

Why Ditching Daylight Saving Time Would Be Healthier for Everyone
Written by Nancy Schimelpfening, MS on March 14, 2022. Fact checked by Jennifer Chesak

  • Each spring, people in the U.S. shift their clocks forward by 1 hour for daylight saving time.
  • Scientists say this long-standing practice may actually be detrimental to our health and safety.
  • Daylight saving time can disrupt our circadian rhythms, making us less alert and prone to illness or accident.
  • Many sleep experts are calling for it to be abolished.
  • In the meantime, a gradual shift in sleep schedule leading up to the time change may help minimize the effects.

I have been complaining about Daylight Saving time for as long as I can remember. It's good to learn that there is actually some science to back up my annual rants.

NIH: Hard water is good for you

Pallav Sengupta, 2013 Aug; 4

In the past five decades or so evidence has been accumulating about an environmental factor, which appears to be influencing mortality, in particular, cardiovascular mortality, and this is the hardness of the drinking water. ...

Hard water has no known adverse health effect, WHO says at its Geneva Conference. In addition, hard water, particularly very hard water, could provide an important supplementary contribution to total calcium and magnesium intake. ...

In most large-scale studies, an inverse relationship between the hardness of drinking-water and cardiovascular disease has been reported. ...

Important findings in this field were provided recently by Taiwanese scientists. In most of their studies, the authors indicated a negative statistical association of various types of cancer morbidity/mortality with the hardness of water and calcium. ...

For years, I've been (jokingly) telling people that I drink tap water because "calcium and iron are good for you". Apparently, there are studies that back this up.

Read the full article for all the details. The upshot of it is that although additional study is needed, it seems that hard water is either beneficial to health or has no impact, depending the health aspect in question.

Forbes: Vitamins Lack Clear Health Benefits, May Pose Risks

No comments:
Back in December, Forbes wrote:

Vitamin fans, take note: An editorial in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine suggests that multivitamins provide no health benefit in the long-run, and in fact, "should be avoided." The authors of the piece, "Enough is Enough: Stop Wasting Money on Vitamin and Mineral Supplements," summarize the work of three review studies in the same journal, which together find no effect for vitamins on cardiovascular health, cancer risk, cognitive health, or mortality. The bottom line, at least to the authors, is clear: We should stop wasting our money on multivitamins, since there’s little evidence to their benefit, and some evidence to their detriment. But as always, others say they jury is still out on this one.

It does go on to say, however, that this is in the context of trying to prevent chronic conditions and extend life. If you don't get enough of something your diet (e.g. many women have iron deficiencies, and people who eat a lot of junk food may lack all kinds of vitamins and minerals), then you should take supplements to make up the difference, but that's a completely different scenario from the person taking large doses of vitamins in order to try and prevent cancer, for example.
