What's on your bookmark list?

Occasionally, I'm asked where I get my news, or what sites I visit for fun. So, just for kicks, here are some of the sites I visit most frequently.

Mac-related news and discussion sites

  • MacInTouch and its community forums. One of the best Mac-related discussion sites on the Internet. Actively moderated, producing a very high signal-to-noise ratio.
  • TidBITS and its discussion forum. Another really great Mac-related discussion site. Also maintains a high signal-to-noise ratio.

I used to frequent a few other tech-related forums, but these days, they produce too much content for me to keep up with and I'm not someone who is comfortable just posting a comment and not sticking around for the rest of the discussion.

YouTube Channels

Ever since getting a smart TV, I find myself watching YouTube instead of "normal" TV channels for most of my free time before bed. Here's a list of the channels I find myself watching a lot of:

  • Art
  • Electronics
    • The Art Of Repair. Techniques for repairing mobile phones. Unfortunately, this channel doesn't update very often these days, but the archives are priceless if this is something you think you might want to do.
    • bigclivedotcom. Clive tears apart electrical and electronic devices to show how they work (or don't work). He also makes some cool stuff.
    • EEVBlog. Dave Jones, from Australia talks about electronics. Device tear-downs, repairs, product design and tutorials.
    • EEVBlog2. Stuff from Dave Jones that doesn't fit into the normal EEVBlog channel because it is either too technical, unscripted or off topic. But often interesting nonetheless.
    • EEVdiscover. Dave Jones' third channel where he visits interesting places and interviews people.
    • iPad Rehab. Jessa Jones diagnoses dead phones and tablets, fixing them and recovering their data.
    • Louis Rossmann. Louis repairs dead Mac computers. Also right-to-repair advocacy and cat videos.
  • Geek stuff
    • The 8-Bit Guy. Refurbishing, reviewing and demonstrating classic computers and personal electronic devices.
    • 8-Bit Keys. Refurbishing, reviewing and performing music on consumer musical keyboards from the 80's through the present.
    • 8-Bit Show And Tell. Retro computers and game consoles, with a lot of focus on the Commodore 64.
    • iFixit. Tearing apart products to determine repairability. Right-to-repair advocacy.
    • Joe's Classic Video Games. Joe runs a store that sells classic game consoles and arcade games. Most videos involve repairing and/or playing the arcade games.
    • LGR. Lazy Game Reviewer. Reviews old PC games and gaming hardware.
    • Linus Tech Tips. Reviews and builds computers, mostly for gaming purposes.
    • Short Circuit. Linus (of Linus Tech Tips) has a second channel for stuff that doesn't quite fit in LTT.
    • Snazzy Labs. Reviewing computers (mostly Macs) and related stuff. With an attitude.
    • Techmoan. British guy reviewing electronic and audio devices, especially old ones of historic interest.
    • Technology Connections. Random presentations about science and technology, including the history of technologies we all know and love but probably don't understand.
    • Technology Connextras. The channel from Technology Connections containing unscripted content that may or may not be interesting.
    • VWestlife. Reviewing and repairing old audio equipment.
  • Hobbyist and Maker stuff
    • Adam Savage's Tested. Adam Savage (of Mythbusters fame) makes cool stuff, talks about all aspects of making stuff, and interviews interesting people in the "makerspace" community.
    • Strange Parts. Scotty shows off interesting electronic projects and tours industrial factories around the world (especially in China).
  • Humor
    • Simon's Cat. Funny animations and useful information about cats.
  • Out and About
    • Exploring With Josh. Josh and friends tour the world, filming what they find. Frequently exploring abandoned places or visiting places the rest of us would never go to.
    • Mickey Views. All the latest news about Disney theme parks, especially the ones in Florida.
    • Offhand Disney. Interesting, but sarcastic, videos about all things Disney.
    • Yesterworld Entertainment. History of Disney and other theme parks and related subjects.
  • Politics

Note: These are conservative political channels. As such, YouTube censors them. You will probably have to visit the channels directly, because most of the videos will not be placed in your normal feed, even if you subscribe to the channels.

  • Science and Engineering
    • Engineer Guy. Doesn't update very often, but has interesting presentations on various engineering topics.
    • Minute Physics. Short videos about physics.
    • The Thought Emporium. Really cool science experiments that you definitely do not want to try at home.

RSS Feeds

In addition to the above, I use an RSS reader (my current favorite is the web-based Feedly to quickly skim headlines and read articles from a lot of different web sites, including:
